Morocco is rapidly becoming a global powerhouse in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, thanks largely to substantial investments from China. Just outside of Tangier, the Mohammed VI Tanger Tech City is emerging as a major manufacturing hub for Chinese companies specializing in automotive components and EV batteries. This strategic move by China aims to secure a foothold in the lucrative European market.

Why Morocco? Faced with increasing trade barriers in the EU and US, Chinese EV manufacturers are turning to Morocco. The country’s strategic location, existing trade agreements, and a growing pool of skilled labor make it an ideal destination for EV production. Additionally, Morocco’s rich phosphate reserves, a key component in EV batteries, provide a competitive advantage.

A Growing Partnership The partnership between Morocco and China has been solidified by significant investments. For instance, Gotion High-Tech’s decision to build a massive battery gigafactory in Morocco underscores the country’s rising importance in the global EV supply chain.

Morocco: A Global Export Leader Morocco’s automotive industry has experienced unprecedented growth, surpassing traditional powerhouses like China, Japan, and India to become the EU’s top car exporter in 2023. This success is largely attributed to the country’s attractive investment climate and the presence of major automakers like Renault and Stellantis.

Looking Ahead Both Morocco and China have ambitious goals for the future of electric mobility. Morocco aims to make EVs account for a significant portion of its automotive exports, while China continues to expand its global footprint in the industry. As this partnership deepens, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the years to come.
